The short version
Audio recognition and location/season context run locally. Your journal is stored inside the app container. You decide whether to save audio, install a model pack, request a community photo, export a journal or use approximate location.

Data handled by the app
Microphone and recordings
BirdHere uses microphone access only after iOS permission is granted. Recognition runs on the device. Short working recordings are not transmitted to Eutopix Labs or an AI provider. A recording is retained only when you deliberately save it using an eligible feature; otherwise temporary audio is discarded by the app.
Location and season
Location is optional. When enabled, coordinates are rounded immediately to roughly a 10 km grid before the local occurrence model uses them. BirdHere does not track you or keep a continuous location history. If you save a field note while location is enabled, the rounded position is stored with that note on your device and shown on your private field-log map. You may turn location off and select a region manually.
Predictions, settings and journal
Likely species, confidence context, soundscape notices, feedback, settings, purchases and journal entries are stored locally. Installed model packs are excluded from device backup. Saved journal data remains until you delete entries or the app. Field notes are included in your own device backups (iCloud or computer) if you use them. Saved recordings are included unless you switch that off in Settings under Backup & data.
iCloud Drive backup (World Pass, optional)
From version 1.2, World Pass holders can turn on automatic iCloud backup. BirdHere then writes a copy of your field notes and soundscape notes, including the rounded position saved with a note, to the app’s folder in your own iCloud Drive. Saved recordings are never copied to this backup. Apple stores the file in your iCloud account under Apple’s terms and privacy policy; Eutopix Labs has no access to it. The backup is off until you turn it on. Turning it off stops new backups; existing backup files stay in iCloud Drive until you delete them in the Files app or in iCloud settings.
Purchases
Apple processes App Store purchases. BirdHere receives transaction and entitlement information needed to unlock World Pass and restore purchases, but does not receive your payment-card details. Apple’s handling is governed by its own privacy policy.
Network features and Apple advertising measurement
Core identification works without a network after the relevant model is installed. The following features use external connections:
- Regional model downloads: requested packs are downloaded over HTTPS from a pinned, checksum-verified model source. The host may receive standard connection data such as IP address and user agent.
- Community bird photos: after an explicit tap, BirdHere requests an exact-species photo and attribution from iNaturalist. iNaturalist receives the species query and standard connection information.
- App Store: StoreKit connects to Apple for product information, purchase and restoration.
- External references: a browser opens only after you tap a source link.
BirdHere does not send your recording, journal or precise coordinates with model or photo requests.
Apple advertising measurement
BirdHere shows no ads, does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), never shows an App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites. It does not add a Meta SDK or any other advertising SDK.
- Apple’s own measurement. If you install BirdHere after tapping an Apple Ads advertisement, Apple may count the install and attribute it to that ad using its own App Store measurement. Apple is responsible for that processing; see Apple’s privacy policy.
- EU/EEA, UK and Switzerland. From the first update of BirdHere released after 14 October 2026, the app sends no SKAdNetwork or AdAttributionKit conversion value in these regions. Earlier versions may send the coarse, aggregate value described below in every country.
- Other regions. Outside these regions (and, in earlier versions, everywhere) the app may send a coarse, aggregate conversion value through Apple’s SKAdNetwork and, on supported devices, AdAttributionKit: a number from 0 to 3 describing progress during the first days after installation (opened the app, completed a useful identification, viewed the paid offer, or gained verified purchase access). It contains no identifier, no IDFA, no recordings, bird identifications, journal entries or locations, and nothing else about you, and no ATT prompt is shown. Apple passes it on delayed and combined with other installs, and may limit or withhold it; Eutopix Labs receives only aggregated postbacks that identify no one. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in measuring our own advertising (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR where applicable).
Optional first-party usage sharing is described below; it is off by default, and versions that do not offer it send no usage counts to Eutopix Labs.
Optional usage sharing
BirdHere does not track you across apps or websites and does not use an advertising identifier. In versions that offer Usage analytics in Settings, you can choose to share basic counts to help Eutopix Labs improve BirdHere. Sharing is off by default and normal features remain usable without it. Counts cover app opens, successful tasks, paywall and plan choices, purchase outcomes and useful returns, plus app version, platform, UTC day and consent-cohort week. We do not send recordings, bird identifications, journal entries, text, precise or rounded locations, financial amounts, name, email, advertising identifiers or persistent account, installation or device identifiers. Purchase outcomes are categories, not transaction identifiers or amounts; locally used transaction identifiers are not uploaded. A temporary random batch identifier recognizes retries. Nothing is collected or queued for analytics before consent.
Eutopix Labs operates the collector using Cloudflare Workers and Cloudflare D1. The database is restricted to the European Union, but Cloudflare’s network may process requests elsewhere and necessarily sees the network address during transport. The collector’s application code does not log or store IP addresses, request headers or raw request bodies. Cloudflare may still process infrastructure and security information under its own obligations and applicable safeguards. Requests are not guaranteed anonymous or entirely processed within the EU. No advertising personalization or cross-company tracking is added.
Unsent counts expire after 7 days. Daily cleanup removes retry identifiers older than 8 days and aggregate counts older than 400 days. Provider recovery copies may retain earlier database states for an additional recovery window, currently up to 30 days depending on the Cloudflare plan. Turning sharing off deletes unsent counts and local sharing metadata; requests already sent may already have been accepted. Combined totals contain no person identifier, so we cannot locate or erase a person’s past contribution. Questions and applicable rights requests can be sent to privacy@birdhere.com.
This website
Birdhere.com is delivered through Cloudflare. Cloudflare may process IP address, request headers, security signals and short-lived technical logs to deliver and protect the site. We do not add advertising, fingerprinting or third-party analytics to this website. Email messages are processed by the mail services used to receive and answer them.
Legal bases and retention
Where GDPR applies: providing the app’s features and processing purchases rely on performance of our contract with you (Article 6(1)(b)); optional usage sharing relies on your consent (Article 6(1)(a)); website delivery and security, and answering support messages, rely on our legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)); keeping records the law requires relies on legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)). Strictly necessary processing supports delivery and security of the service and our legitimate interest in answering support and protecting the site. Features you deliberately enable, such as location, external photo requests and optional usage sharing, operate at your request and under device permissions or your choice in Settings, which you can withdraw at any time. Local app data stays under your control. Support correspondence is kept only as long as reasonably needed to resolve the request, maintain necessary records and meet legal obligations.
Children
BirdHere is a general-audience reference tool. It is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 in the EU, and does not knowingly collect children’s personal data through accounts or advertising profiles. A parent or guardian should supervise microphone and location permissions where appropriate.
International processing
Cloudflare, Apple, model hosts (our own models.birdhere.com and Hugging Face) and iNaturalist may process limited connection data outside Poland or the European Economic Area. Where Apple or Cloudflare transfer personal data to the United States, they rely on the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses; other providers apply their own safeguards. Sensitive identification data remains on the device unless you deliberately export it.
Your choices and rights
You can deny microphone or location access, use manual region selection, remove saved entries and audio, uninstall downloaded packs, export eligible journal data, keep usage sharing off or turn it off at any time, or delete the app and its local data. Depending on your location, you may also request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection or portability for personal data we hold, and withdraw consent at any time without affecting earlier processing. Data kept only on your device or in your own iCloud is under your control: we cannot see it, so you manage or delete it in the app. You may complain to the President of the Personal Data Protection Office (Prezes Urzędu Ochrony Danych Osobowych, UODO), ul. Stawki 2, 00-193 Warszawa, Poland, uodo.gov.pl, or to the data-protection authority where you live or work.
California and other US state privacy rights
We do not sell or share personal information, as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. The categories we may receive are identifiers and message content you send us by email, and internet activity limited to technical request data, plus, only if you opt in, the anonymous usage counts described above. You may ask to know, correct or delete personal information we hold by writing to privacy@birdhere.com; we will not discriminate against you for doing so.
Do Not Track: this site and our apps do not track you across third-party sites or services, so they behave the same whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal.
